International Women’s Day: Celebrating and Supporting Our International #Breasties Community in Mexico

International women’s day is arguably one of the best holidays because it reminds us of our sisters all around the world.

It’s a day for us to lift each other up and highlight the amazing work that women are doing globally, as well as a day to high-five ourselves at how far we have come.

It’s also a day to dig deep and remember that we have a long way to go to address women's rights for ALL women, everywhere.

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the work we are doing with our global partners in Mexico to address the disparities in education around breast cancer prevention, detection and to support our international sisters.

In Mexico, breast cancer has had a constant increase, both in its incidence and in its rate of mortality, in the last three decades (Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health). Breast cancer in women under 40 years of age is also more frequent (13.3%) than in the North American or European population (Colima 2021).

While many focus on mammography and other such medical testing, doing a routine self-check can positively affect rates of breast cancer survival. Self-checks are especially important for young people as generally, women do not start getting mammogram screenings until the age of 40, further feeding into the belief that breast cancer only affects women 40 and older.

Early detection definitively saves lives, providing those who’ve found a potential breast cancer lump or other symptoms of concern, with the time they need to seek out answers and breast cancer treatment following a positive diagnosis.

This is why, in partnership with Givelify, KAB has recently launched our “KAB App” in Spanish! In anticipation of our new Spanish app rollout, a talented team of six artists and activists created special artwork to help educate their communities in a highly engaging and creative way.

Here are the stories of two of those artists and activists who joined us to mark this impactful KAB milestone in Mexico.

Thank you to Givelify for documenting this milestone and highlighting what these artists have created to bring attention to breast cancer prevention in their communities.
