For the entire month of April Mohawk Bend in Echo Park will feature a one-of-a-kind pizza that will benefit Keep A Breast. Four dollars from every Keep Abreast and Curry On pizza sold will go towards breast cancer awareness and preventative education. Each month Mohawk Bend chooses a local non-profit to benefit from their Piece of the Pie program and we couldn’t be more excited about being this month’s pick.

BREAST CANCER RATES ARE 5 TIMES LESS IN INDIA THAN IN THE U.S. DUE TO A MOSTLY PLANT-BASED AND FREQUENT USE OF SPICES, LIKE CURRY AND TUMERIC.

Curry is the power ingredient that we think should be used a lot more. Research shows that there is a spice in curry that inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells. It is actually the Curcumin in curry recipes, which gives it the yellow color that is responsible for these therapeutic effects. In fact, overall cancer rates are much lower in India than they are in the United States, with a breast cancer rate that is five times less than ours . Of course, there are other factors involved in the low cancer rates, but researchers have found that their overall diet is big contributor, containing low meat intake, mostly a plant-based diet and lots of spices packed with anti-oxidants. The most beneficial of the curry powder ingredients seems to be the seeds, especially the centratherum seeds.

Centratherum, a seed found in curry, is a potent antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant, helping it to reduce stress on cells, stimulate healing and even lessen pain.

Researchers have found that Centratherum has the ability to kill breast cancer cells and fight against further tumor growth. It can kickstart the healing processes in inflammatory conditions and act as an analgesic, lessening or even halting pain. Physicians have even used to for centuries to treat diabetes and skin disorders.

When Shaney Jo, founder of Keep A Breast, was concocting this colorful pizza with Mohawk Bend, she made sure to include lots of plant-based ingredients like curry, fennel, spinach, basil, cauliflower and vegan cashew cheese. So whether you are eating this yummy curry pizza or just making food at home, curry and all it's spice friends are a great addition to any meal for a super cancer fighting boost.

You can keep the pizza vegan or add a little chicken when you get your Keep Abreast and Curry On pizza this month at Mohawk Bend, either way your giving a piece of the pie to Keep A Breast and breast cancer education.
